A Village Walk to the Palatine Museum – Community, History & Connection

This week, members of the Rathkeale and District Community Men’s Shed took part in a very special outing that blended local heritage, fresh air, and community connection.

We began the morning with a village walk, setting off together from the Shed on the grounds of Rathkeale AFC. It was a relaxed stroll through town, giving us time to chat, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the local surroundings.

Our destination? The Irish Palatine Heritage Centre, where we met up with members of the Adare Men’s Shed and the Rathkeale Women’s Group.

Once gathered, we enjoyed a guided tour and talk about the history of the Palatine settlers — their journey to Ireland, their way of life, and their long-lasting impact on Rathkeale and beyond. It was an engaging and eye-opening session that sparked a lot of great conversation.

To finish, we all shared tea and refreshments, giving everyone a chance to relax, mingle, and enjoy a few laughs.

Some of the members of both sheds are missing from the image above as the call of Tea was too strong to ignore!

Days like these show what Men’s Sheds are all about — community, conversation, and shared experiences.

A big thank you to the Palatine Museum for their warm welcome, and to our friends at the Adare Men’s Shed and the Rathkeale Women’s Group for making the day so enjoyable. We also want to thank West Limerick Resources for funding this tour, all of our members appreciated it!
